  Web Hosting

 What You Need?

There is many web hosting companies around and deciding on the right one for you can be a task. There is some thing's to consider and I'll explain what are the key thing's you need from a web hosting company.

 DISK SPACE

This is obvious and the more space available, the better you are to advance your website over time by adding more content. I wouldn't go near any web hosting company that is offering anything less than GB's of space, if you’re serious about your website becoming a force on the web.

 DOMAIN NAME

You’re going need your own domain name for a business and most web hosting companies provide you with 1 free registration. You can usually register a .com, .net domain name, some hosting companies don't allow .co.uk for some reason, mostly us hosting companies don't provide this option. If a hosting company you are looking at doesn't provide at least 1 free domain registration, then look elsewhere.

 BANDWIDTH

Bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.

If you hit your bandwidth limit within a certain time period (usually 1 month), then your website will become inactive and no one will be able to view your website until the end of the month period. This is why it is important to select a web hosting company that provides a large amount of bandwidth, as the last thing you want is your business site going down for a short period.

I would suggest anything from 100GB bandwidth and above would be sufficient but the more the better.

 CODING LANGUAGES

The languages that a web hosting company provides is also important, if a web hosting company doesn't provide CGI-BIN, Perl , PHP and My SQL databases, then I would suggest looking elsewhere. My SQL is commonly used to store database information on customers for example and PHP is commonly used to write to My SQL. Perl is another coding language that is used a lot and is handy to have there if you need it

 SUB-DOMAINS

Most web hosting companies will provide sub-domains, these are basically something like subdomain.domainname.com, there handy to have if you have wide range of topics you plan to build websites around. You can use sub domains and have a separate website for each topic. 20 sub-domains or above should be sufficient but the more the better.

 FTP ACCESS

FTP stands for "file transfer protocol"; this is a feature that is a must. You will need a way to upload you website to the web hosting server and FTP is the most common way to do so. If a web hosting company doesn't provide this option, and then look elsewhere.

 WEB-MAIL AND EMAIL ACCOUNTS

You’re going to need email accounts for your visitors to contact you and it is best to have email addresses that match your domain name. Most web hosting companies will provide a web mail service and a certain number of email accounts. Yet again, the more email accounts the better.

 PRICE

The price is important for obvious reasons; you want value for money and something that is affordable. I tend to find the US web hosting company's are cheaper than UK hosting, I have no idea why this is but maybe it's due to a larger market in the US and hosting company's need to charge cheaper pricing to get business.

 LIVE HELP

If you do use US hosting and are based in the UK, then an option to have 24/7 live chat on your web hosting company's site becomes important. It's not like you can see someone face to face and this is the next best thing

 Dedicated or Non Dedicated?

There can be dedicated and non-dedicated servers. This is referring to the amount of web sites that are inputted into these servers. A dedicated server is literally dedicated to one web site and only that one site. This will ensure that the web site's performance is as high as it can be. A non-dedicated web server means that there are hundreds of web sites using the same server. This is what the normal web site is on; it is only the super high traffic web sites that need to have their own server to ensure their high quality hosting.
